Thomas Kolakowski (marimba) and Gilad Arnon (piano), members of the Temple University New Music Ensemble under the direction of Jan Krzywicki, will premiere Vidiksis’s work Expansions.
Expansions is a study of shifting space in three parts. It begins with a free, prelude-like section in which the marimba and piano gesture melodically explore ever-decreasing intervallic spaces. This leads to an agitated figure stated in the marimba at the opening of the second part of the work. This gesture is explored in a fugue section that follows. Subsequent entries of the fugue subject occur on expanding and contracting registral spaces, before finally returning to their original form. The concluding portion of the work undoes the process of the first, now using contracting harmonies as the intervallic content of the melodic gestures expand until the final notes of the piece are heard.
