Adapted by Fay and Michael Kanin from the film by Akira Kurosawa Set in 12th century Feudal Japan, much puzzlement and confusion ensues over the murder of a Samurai and the rape of his wife. Through four wildly diverse depictions of the crime–given by the dead Samurai’s wife, a woodcutter, a bandit and the dead Samurai himself–the true details of the incident seemingly fail to be uncovered. The question, then, begs to be asked: has the whole truth been provided through one of the character’s accounts, or does skewed memory and self-interest cloud even the most rational of witnesses?
