Audrey Chen (Berlin):
AUDREY CHEN is a Chinese-American musician who was born into a family of material scientists, doctors and engineers, outside of Chicago in 1976. Parting ways with the family convention, she turned to the cello at age 8 and voice at 11. After years of classical and conservatory training in both instruments, with a resulting specialization in early and new music, she parted ways again in 2003 to begin new negotiations with sound in order to discover a more individually honest aesthetic.Now, using the cello, voice and analog electronics, Chen’s work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linear storytelling. A large component of her music is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of a homemade analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.
Over the past decade, her primary focus has been her solo work with cello, voice and electronics, but she has more recently begun to shift back towards the exploration of the voice as a primary instrument. Among musicians, she has worked with Phil Minton, Tetuzi Akiyama, Toshimaru Nakamura, Ko Ishikawa, Tomomi Adachi, Matana Roberts, Elliott Sharp, Aki Onda, Phill Niblock, Frederic Blondy, Jerome Noetinger, C. Spencer Yeh, Nate Wooley, Mats Gustafsson, Mazen Kerbaj, Michael Zerang, Tatsuya Nakatani, Le Quan Ninh, Joe Mcphee, Susan Alcorn, Michele Doneda, Paolo Angeli, Dylan Nyoukis, Id M Theft Able, plus many more.
Recent collaborations aside from performing solo, include her voice only duo with London based artist, Phil Minton and a multidisciplinary project with German conceptual artist, John Bock. Two new album releases in 2013 include, a quartet with Nate Wooley, C. Spencer Yeh and Todd Carter on Monotype (Warsaw), and a duo record with Phil Minton on Subrosa (Brussels).
Flandrew Fleisenberg (Philadelphia):
Flandrew plays percussion on an assortment of everyday ephemera and modified drum parts that he has reduced and eroded through a process of playing and breaking them. A recent migrant from Boston, Flandrew is busily planting roots across Philadelphia co-curating the H-O-T improvised music and dance series as well ad hoc events around town. Flandrew has been involved in the improvised and creative music community since 2001 performing solo, in ad-hoc improv groupings and in set projects. Margaret Rorison (Baltimore):
Margaret Rorison has been making films since 2011. Before she discovered the magic of filmmaking, she spent most of her energy on poetry, painting and photography. Her current work often develops from extensive walks through rural and urban landscapes, combining memories, field recordings and text. She is interested in the potentials of storytelling through the use of live projection and sound.
Rorison’s work has been screened at various festivals and venues including Anthology Film Archives, Ann Arbor Film Festival, CROSSROADS, Images Festival, Mono No Aware VI & VII, Sonic Circuits Festival, Microscope Gallery, The Moscow Museum of Modern Art and The High Zero Festival.
She is the co-founder and curator for a roaming experimental film series, Sight Unseen and holds an MFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art. She has been a member of The High Zero Foundation since 2011 and has been serving on the Maryland Film Festival Screening Committee since 2012.
Adam Vidiksis (Philadelphia):
Adam Vidiksis is a composer, conductor, percussionist, and technologist based in Philadelphia. Equally comfortable with both electronic and acoustic composition, his music has been heard in concert halls and venues around the world. Critics have called his music “mesmerizing”, “dramatic”, “striking” (Philadelphia Weekly), “notable”, “catchy” (WQHS), “interesting”, and “special” (Percussive Notes), and have noted that Vidiksis provides “an electronically produced frame giving each sound such a deep-colored radiance you could miss the piece’s shape for being caught up in each moment” (David Patrick Stearns of the Philadelphia Inquirer). Dr. Vidiksis currently serves on the faculty at Temple University.
